Macedon, NY – Fire officials are investigating to determine why a furnace exploded in a Wayne County home Tuesday morning.

The homeowner was inside the two-story home at 2249 Wilcox Road in Macedon when the explosion occurred around 9:45 a.m., said Joe Sirianno, first assistant fire chief of the South Macedon Fire Department.

She was alone in the home when the explosion occurred and was not injured.

Emergency responders found that the majority of the damage to the house was an exterior wall in the rear of the house, he said.

The explosion pushed out the wall and and blew out several windows, including a sliding glass door.

A minor fire burned briefly after the explosion.

It was not yet clear what caused the propane furnace to explode, Sirianno said.

“The victim is very lucky,” he said. “She was in the right place in the house at the right time. To walk out unscathed is amazing.”

Sirianno said the woman was on the second floor of the house when the furnace failed.

The American Red Cross is assisting the homeowner.
