Columbia, IL- Firefighters received a call at 7:45 a.m. Friday for a house explosion in Columbia, Ill.

KMOX listeners said they could see flames shooting from a home in the 100 block Lookout Drive, near IL Route 3 and IL Route 158.

Columbia Fire Chief Mike Rodeiger said when they arrived, the house was completely engulfed in flames and it took about two hours to control the fire.

The owner of the home told firefighters he went to turn on the furnace and a few moments later, the house exploded.

A few explosions were heard due to a small amount of ammunition the owner had in the home.

Witnesses tell the Monroe County Republic-Times one person was able to get out to safety, however, Rodeiger said if it weren’t for the house having liquid propane rather than natural gas, the owner may have lost his life.
