CO – An elderly Calhan man is in the hospital and his home destroyed after what firefighters believe was a gas explosion.They think that Andrew Grutel, 78 was cooking Thursday morning when his propane stove exploded, catching his home on Hanisch Road on fire.Grutel managed to walk to a neighbors house and call for help, despite suffering second and third degree burns and smoke inhalation.He was airlifted to Penrose Hospital for treatment.
The official cause of the fire is still under investigation.Grutel was the only one home at the time.
