INpolis, IN – A gas explosion forced 40 residents of a Near-Northside apartment complex to evacuate late Saturday.

It started at the Emma O. Johnson Apartments, 919 Edgemont Ave., when a gas explosion blew a door off a refrigerator in one of the apartments.

Indianapolis Fire Department Capt. Gregory Harris said no one was injured in the blast. Of the residents who were evacuated, 36 were taken to an American Red Cross Shelter and returned home about 8 a.m. Sunday, said Barbara Brinson, spokeswoman for the American Red Cross of Greater Indianapolis. The others made their own arrangements.

Harris said firefighters were called to investigate the odor of gas in one of the apartments earlier Saturday.
