A punctured gas line was blamed yesterday for a house explosion that killed

an elderly couple Saturday night near Stony Plain, Alta., west of Edmonton.

Investigators said a 66 year-old man was building his 72-year-old wife a

flower garden at the home they had recently purchased for their retirement when

he drove a piece of metal rebar into the ground, puncturing the gas line.

The house slowly filled with natural gas as the couple did yard work outside.

In the evening, when the woman went inside, it exploded, completely destroying

the home.
