Birmingham, AL- Two people burned in a fire about noon Thursday after an explosion at a mobile home were treated at a Birmingham hospital.

Someone who lives next to a mobile home on New Liberty Road in the Webster’s Chapel community, just inside Calhoun County and near the Etowah County line, heard an explosion, Calhoun County Sheriff Larry Amerson said.

The people inside the mobile home, identified by neighbors as Jimmy Tatum and Crystal Wilhite, were burned severely.

The man and woman were treated by Webster’s Chapel Fire Department medics and were flown by Life Saver helicopter to University Hospital in Birmingham.

A hospital spokesman said late Thursday that Tatum still was being treated in the hospital’s emergency department and was listed in stable condition. Wilhite was admitted to an intensive care unit at University Hospital and was listed in serious condition.

Amerson said the cause of the explosion is being investigated, but there is speculation of a problem with some propane gas.

He said the state fire marshal’s office has been asked to assist in the investigation.
