Crest Hill, IL – By ABC7Chicago.com, May 23, 2004 (Crest Hill) — Two people were injured in a huge explosion that flattened a home in the southwest suburbs. It happened in the 18-hundred block of north Nicholson in Crest Hill.

The fire department reports an elderly woman and her son smelled gas then lit a match. The big blast happened just before six pm Sunday.

The woman was trapped in the rubble. Witnesses say her son stumbled into the street covered in glass. The female victim — believed to be in her nineties — was airlifted to the hospital.

“I looked out the window and all this stuff was going up in the air all wood and everything and the house going up and I screamed bloody murder because two people were in there,” said Madeleine Spiller.

Ten surrounding homes were heavily damaged. NICOR shut off gas in the area.
