An Orleans County man has died of injuries and burns suffered during an explosion and fire inside his home Friday, Orleans County sheriff’s officials revealed today.

Steven L. Broadwell, 49, died early this afternoon in Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester.

The explosion occurred shortly before 7 p.m. Friday, after Broadwell had gone into the basement of his home on Oak Orchard River Road in the Town of Carlton to investigate a propane odor. He was taken to Medina Memorial Hospital, then transferred to Strong Memorial.

The cause of the blast remains under investigation by the Orleans County Office of Emergency Management, the state Office of Fire Prevention and Control and now the Monroe County medical examiner’s office.
