Harvey, IL- An apparent natural gas buildup caused a house explosion Friday morning in Harvey, with flying debris slightly injuring a child walking to school, officials said.

The home, near 158th Street and Vine Avenue in the south suburb, was destroyed in the 8 a.m. explosion, said Harvey spokeswoman Sandra Alvarado.

“It’s completely demolished,” Alvarado said.

She said a child walking to school with other children was hit by debris and suffered minor injuries. No other injuries were reported.

Alvarado said Nicor gas crews were on the scene investigating. Nicor officials could not immediately be reached for comment.
