Manhattan, NY – A gas explosion rocked a jewelry workshop in Midtown Manhattan Thursdsay morning.
Police say the explosion occurred in a gas meter on the 14th floor of a building at 36 West 47th Street.
The cause is not yet known, but Con Edison says a faulty Bunsen burner may be to blame.
“They are very fortunate that there was no resulting fire from the explosion, said FDNY Chief Anthony Devita. The gas just exploded with no fire and it could have caused a lot more damage then it did had it lit up.”
Three floors were evacuated but tenants on two of them have since been allowed to return. No injuries have been reported.
