Jasper, TX – KBTV-4 – A Jasper County family is fighting for their lives tonight after a powerful explosion destroyed their home Wednesday night. The explosion ould be heard from ten miles away.

Ricky Armstrong was sifting through the charred rubble that was once his neighbors’ home when KBTV-4 News crews arrived Thursday morning.

“The house was gone when I got here,” Armstrong told us.‘When I saw the house,” he continued, “I thought everybody was dead.”

According to Ricky, shortly before ten o’clock last night he heard and felt a blast so strong it shook his house. The next thing he heard was his neighbors, a mother and her three young children, screaming for their lives.

“They just kept hollering they want ice and they want water,” Armstrong said.

The blast occurred only moments after the family had returned home from church.

The family of four who nearly lost their lives in the fire were relatives of Mary Bronson, who also felt the explosion at her home nearly a mile away.

“I was in the house mopping and heard a big boom that kind shook the building,” Bronson told us. “I said what in the world was that?”

Little did Mary know the noise she heard was her family’s home going up in flames.

All four of the people in the house at the time of the explosion are alive—some say thanks, in part, to people like Ricky Armstrong, who risked his own safety to help.

“The lord was with somebody,” said Armstrong.

Relatives say the two young girls are listed in good condition, their 13 year old brother underwent surgery Thursday and the 30-year-old mother remains in critical condition. All are at UTMB Galveston.

The fire is thought to be started after someone plugged in a space heater after they smelled gas in the air.
