Houston, TX- Firefighters said they believe a natural gas explosion led to an elderly woman’s death late Friday night in southeast Houston.

Witnesses said they heard an explosion at a couple’s home near the intersection of Shawnee and Welk around 10:30 p.m.

“I went outside the roof had blown off into the street,” said neighbor Inez Shelton. “My son immediately went in the house and found [the husband] in the bathroom and they were able to get him out.”

Shelton said the wife, who was in her late 70s or early 80s, did not make it out. Authorities said her body was found two hours later after the fire was out. The husband was taken to the hospital and was expected to survive.

Firefighters said they found several fragments of oxygen containers in the rubble.

Authorities said they would continue to investigate.
