Ruth Ann and John Moore fell in love during after-school detention in high school. He would goof off in class. She would giggle. They’d get in trouble together.

It was the start of a relationship that included 41 years of marriage, two sons, adventurous travels to six continents and a passionate commitment to San Jose’s downtown art institutions.

It came to a sudden end last week.

Ruth Ann Moore died Thursday at their vacation home in Alpine Meadows. Moore, 63, who had spent the day skiing with a friend, had been overcome by carbon monoxide poisoning from a malfunctioning furnace. Her friend, Kathy Strohmeier of Half Moon Bay, passed out but survived.

“When someone like this dies, you wonder why the whole world hasn’t just stopped,” said Len Sprinkles, a retired Santa Clara County Superior Court judge who, with his wife, considered the Moores their closest friends.
