Vineland, NJ – A natural-gas explosion caused severe damage to the basement and kitchen of a vacant home in the 800 block of Florence Avenue. No injuries were reported.

Lt. Wayne Fowler of the city’s Fire Department said 24 firefighters and five trucks responded to the unoccupied home at 8:12 p.m. Friday. They used 150 gallons of water to extinguish the blaze.

A natural-gas explosion caused the fire, Fowler said, but the origin of the blaze remained under investigation Sunday.

The fire severely damaged the walls, windows and floor of the kitchen and basement, Fowler said.

Firefighters cleared the scene at 9:32 p.m.

The city’s electric utility and South Jersey Gas shut off utilities in the house, Fowler said.
